Much of early sign language development is noun based, but in order to make a link to print literacy, the high frequency sight words must be learned. Dolch words are primarily function words that can be learned quickly through repetition and links to visual elements in order to commit the words to memory. Because one sign may represent many ideas or concepts, there is not a one word to one sign relationship in either ASL or ISN.
